REFLECTION

Unit X is intended to unite students from different creative areas, allowing them to explore and experiment both personally and as a team. This format enables us to have a wider understanding of different areas of design and enriches our own personal creativity. On reflection the group interacted and worked well together. In order to achieve a collaborative piece of work, both primary research as a group and also as an individual was necessary. Contextual understanding is required to produce individual design concepts and visualisations with a common theme. Collaborations can be mutually beneficial to all parties involved. It can allow discussion and free flow of ideas and designs, which can influence the design process.

I found our group meetings both productive and informative and enabled a more structured work ethic. This in turn improved individual time management. Regular contact with tutors and art gallery staff provided essential feedback and ensured the project stayed on track. During this process I took part in communicating the ideas of the group. I feel satisfied with my own personal contribution to the project as I was committed and motivated throughout. During this project I had the opportunity to work along side a 3D student specialising in glass making. I found her work to be interesting and unique, offering a different style approach to a project.

My personal ideas and designs throughout the project have developed and grown using various motifs to form a variety of wallpaper designs. During the Unit X project I have communicated my ideas fully with the group. Throughout we have communicated and during our regular meetings have shown each other initial designs and any ideas we were developing. This is an important aspect as it gives the individual confidence within their own design and allows the project to move forward as whole.

Reflection on developed ideas...

Above are two different design ideas sharing the same motifs in a different layout. The first one features simple flower motifs using a range of colours from the chosen colour palette. My preferred design is the second one as I like the added extra overlapping leaves, giving the wallpaper design more interest and depth. I also feel it shows a good response to the reflection of the wallpaper against the glass.

Originally my designs featured a green background. After reconsulting the colour palette I feel these initials designs were not completely relevant to the theme. I therefore decided to experiment further with pink and purple shades, which I feel was part of the main colour palette.

Experimenting further with the pink and purple shades below in this design. I feel these motifs combine effectively as a print.

My Final Chosen design...

I am satisfied with my final design and the layout of the motifs. During meetings and comparing each others developing ideas this design and use of colour was the most suited to the exhibition, complimenting the final pieces of the other designers. My first time using the wide format printers, produced a positive outcome of a large scale design. In future I would consider the scale and quality of the motifs more when scanning into photoshop, ensuring the design is not pixelated. The more practice I have the more my design skills should improve and flow. As a designer there is always opportunity for improvement.

Above are the final pieces displayed at the exhibition. We were all pleased with the final appearance of the project. My wallpaper design compliments and fits in well especially with the weave and the pieces of glass. The glass could be viewed as opening flowers, which reflects my wallpaper theme, featuring the same shapes as the flower buds on my design. I love the texture and colours used in the pieces of weave, following the colour palette theme. The cushion could have interlinked with the colour theme by using a bigger range of the purples rather than greens. However the designs of nature on the cushion flow effectively along side the other ideas.

Nature

Continuing with my research and the impact that colour has on our world, I decided to put down my thoughts once again on mind maps. I find collating and presenting my ideas in this way gives a clear indication of where my ideas and thought processes are heading. My first mind map introduces the  Psychology of colour, how this is seen and what each colour symbolises. This is referring back to a previously mentioned Chinese five colour system. Colour to us all can be perceived in varying ways. Light as we have already found can dramatically change the aspects of different colours. Yellow tones are thought to create warmth and energy, white is thought of as pure and innocent, red promotes love, excitement but also anger. Interestingly green is thought to promote a calming and relaxing feel. This is in line with the Chinese colour system where the colour green was thought to promote harmony. Colours have also been known to affect peoples moods and how they view their surroundings. Gree...

Royal Armouries Museum Leeds

The second part of this unit required us to visit the Royal Armouires Museum in Leeds. Housing arms and armour from all over the globe and and exhibiting warfare from many different times. There are many different exhibitions on display including the Oriental Gallery and The Swords of Middle Earth.  I feel a lot of the items on display were more applicable to students specialising in weave or   knit, however, I did take inspiration from markings and thin linings. Rather than looking at the image as a whole, I zoomed into certain sections to highlight individual areas of interest. This enabled me to produce simple drawings that could be used as my motifs to form overall prints.  Although I am not particularly interested in warfare as a whole, I do feel the trip was beneficial for me to visualise and take inspiration from objects and translate this into a design form.  Scanned in pages of my sketchb...

End of Unit Review

At the beginning of this project I was asked to produce approximately a hundred object drawings. Although I find drawing enjoyable I have found some of the more complex work rather challenging and, on occasions, have lacked confidence when trying to create a piece to a high technical standard. The assignment has highlighted that drawings can be produced not only in pencil but from different medias such as paints, charcoal and ink, incorporating various textures and styles. The sheer quantity of drawings required helped to greatly improve my sketching technique. I chose fabrics suitable for a range of interior products such as cushions, bedding, lamp shades and blinds, including heavy weight cotton and polyester. The pigment colours and effects produced varied on different fabrics. I have used many digital prints within my collection, as I felt they integrated well and complimented each other. I have found using my sketch book very beneficial when planning prints from conceptio...
